East Central Regional Library presents the traditional Irish music of Sean Gavin, accompanied by bandmate Brian Miller, coming up at branch libraries in North Branch, Aitkin and Milaca. Gavin’s play on the Irish flute and uilleann pipes—the national bagpipe of Ireland—reflect his lifelong love for Irish traditional music. Originally from Detroit, he was first encouraged to take up Irish music by his Irish-born father. Gavin went on to win the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal in 2016 for his flute playing.
In between songs, Gavin will talk about the history and design of uilleann pipes, the Irish wooden flute and the Irish immigrant musicians of Chicago and elsewhere who have kept the tradition alive in the United States. He will be accompanied by Brian Miller on guitar and bouzouki. Both musicians play in the critically acclaimed group Bua.
