PROGRAM UPDATE: The Wordplay Workshop at the McGregor branch on Saturday, Sept. 30 has been cancelled.

Jazz of the 20s and 30s with Belle Amour

Jazz music played a significant part in the life and culture of 1920s Minnesota.  But why did the Prohibition era and jazz go hand in hand?  In many aspects, the banning of alcohol led to the establishment of speakeasies and eventually the evolution of jazz music in the 1920s.  Jazz musicians were now able to find numerous employment opportunities in the speakeasies and became friends with many of the era’s gangsters.
The 1920s was a period of great change in American life and the jazz movement was spurred by the invention of the automobile as a new and independent mode of transportation helped the shift the population from rural areas to cities, plus the advancement of modern media including phonographs, radio and talking pictures enabled jazz to become an integral part of 20s culture.
Belle Amour, a fun, high-energy jazz group will perform on Saturday, October 7 at 7:00 pm at the North Branch High School Auditorium.  Join us as they present a mix of classic American 20s and 30s jazz standards, and be transported to a vintage era that will leave you feeling nostalgic.  You are welcome to come dressed in period attire (or not) and drift back in time to when jazz was the “bee’s knees.” The program is sponsored by East Central Regional Library and the North Branch Area Library in partnership with North Branch Community Ed.  The Belle Amour event is part of our ECRL Reads program and is funded with money from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
