American roots, American branches

Continue celebrating Audiobook Month throughout June!

AudiobookSYNC’s Week 8 titles feature American cultural history told from insiders’ perspectives, honoring Juneteenth on June 19th.

The Red Umbrella by Christina Diaz Gonzalez is based on Operation Pedro Pan, an early 1960s project to send unaccompanied Cuban children to the United States in order to avoid what their families feared would become Fidel Castro’s denial of parental authority.

It is paired with the classic by African American scholar W.E.B. Du BoisThe Souls of Black Folk contains many essays on race and equality.

These titles celebrate the power of audiobooks to overcome cultural stereotypes and give listeners the opportunity to stretch beyond their own assumptions.

Bone Gap by Laura Rubybone-gap-97140-sync2016-2400x2400

Everyone knows Bone Gap is full of gaps. So when young, beautiful Roza went missing, the people of Bone Gap weren’t surprised. After all, it wasn’t the first time that someone had slipped away and left Finn and Sean O’Sullivan on their own. Just a few years ago, their mother hightailed it to Oregon for a brand-new guy, a brand-new life. Finn knows what really happened to Roza. He knows she was kidnapped by a dangerous man whose face he cannot remember. But the searches turn up nothing, and no one believes him anymore. Not even Sean, who has more reason to find Roza than anyone and every reason to blame Finn for letting her go.

SYNC Week 14

This week’s pairing highlights just a few of the many ways of being American.

book-of-unknown-americans-89305-sync2016-1200x1200most-dangerous-105020-sync2016-1200x1200

Cristina Henríquez’s novel The Book of Unknown Americans takes us inside a community of whom many Americans have little awareness. This book unfolds with an ensemble of Latino neighbors from a variety of cultures, with different personal histories, and with diverse prospects. For now, though, they live in a Delaware apartment complex, going out each day to work or to school. There’s an unusual teen love story here, as well as finely detailed and realized characters of all ages.

Steve Sheinkin’s Most Dangerous: Daniel Ellsberg and the Secret History of the Vietnam War holds a very different kind of revelation about America. This history of government deception and the journalist who exposed the subterfuge won the Young Adult Library Services Association’s 2016 Excellence in Nonfiction Award and was a finalist for a National Book Award. Sheinkin brings a complex episode from recent American history into focus with such clarity that listeners can understand how and why so many Americans of today hold an underlying skepticism about our government.
