IRS Limits 2014 Tax Documents to Public Libraries

It’s tax season. Tax forms usually start to arrive at the libraries in January. Minnesota Income and Property tax booklets and forms have begun to arrive.

East Central Regional Library has received notice that, due to budget cuts in the 2015 Omnibus Appropriations bill recently passed by Congress, the IRS will significantly reduce the number of tax products they are sending to libraries for distribution. The IRS will not be sending out any 1040, 1040 A or 1040 EZ instruction booklets, as well as several other forms and publications that libraries used to receive. Libraries will still receive Forms 1040, 1040 A, and 1040 EZ. Individuals and employers may order forms from the IRS webpage or by calling 1-800-829-3676 Monday through Friday from 7 am-7 pm, and the IRS will deliver them by mail to you. Many forms and instructions are also available to view and download online.

Library staff can assist with locating and printing online tax forms but are not able to give advice regarding the forms that you might need. Printing and copying is $.15/single-sided black & white page, $.25/double-sided black & white page, and $.50/single-sided color page.

You may wish to call your local library to see if the form(s) you need are in. The IRS has not started shipping the 1040, 1040A, or 1040EZ forms.

Announcing the new OverDrive app for eBooks & eAudiobooks!

A new version of the OverDrive app for Android, iOS, and Windows 8 was released yesterday!

This most long-awaited update is the elimination of the Adobe Authorization step from the app installation process! Users no longer need to create and/or authorize their app with an Adobe ID to get started enjoying eBooks & eAudiobooks.
We expect this change will significantly improve user experience during the set-up process, as this has been one of our most common questions for new Digital Library users.
Rather than the Adobe Authorization process, first-time users will now be prompted to create an OverDrive account.* There is no required change for existing users with an Adobe ID or OverDrive account already associated with their OverDrive app, even after updating to the newest version.  Existing users can sign up for an OverDrive account at any time.
A favorite feature of an OverDrive account is the ability to sync your reading progress across multiple devices. Read on your tablet at home, and then pick up in the same place on your smart phone while waiting in line at the grocery store!
Other app updates:

  • The ability to save libraries and common searches on your OverDrive account.
  • The app name is no longer “OverDrive Media Console,” but simply “OverDrive.” The app website has moved to
  • The ability to return Open EPUB titles before the end of their lending period. All formats can now be returned before expiration.
OverDrive Help has been updated to reflect the updates in OverDrive v.3.2.

We hope you enjoy the new app experience!  If you have questions, please let us know.

Sarah Hawkins, Resource Librarian

*Users under the age of 13 can anonymously authorize the OverDrive app without creating an OverDrive account.

Funky Possum Dance Party to Celebrate End of Summer Reading Program

The summer has flown by and it’s about time for us to end our Paws to Read Summer reading program at our libraries.  But there’s one last thing to do!  We’re going to celebrate with a program, the Funky Possum Dance Party.  Funky Possum Dance Party is a high-energy, fun, and interactive show for children and families featuring the stars of the EMMY Award winning “The Zinghoppers Show”, as seen on over 100 PBS Kids member stations nationwide.  The program is geared toward families and kids 8 and under.

Funky Possum sings, dances, giggles and we’ll have you and your family joining in the fun.  Funky Possum will also bring along with her pals the goofy breakdancing rapper Coconuts the Kangaroo and friendly Sunny Fixalot on the turntable.

The concert features original songs from the TV series as well as classic kid’s tunes and dance numbers.  Families will be singing, dancing and hopping along to this fun, interactive show where kids in the audience become the stars of the show.  So get ready for a funky time with Funky Possum’s Dance Party as we celebrate another successful summer of reading at your ECRL branch.  The event is sponsored by East Central Regional Library and made possible with funds from Minnesota’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Check out the flyer below for the nearest show to you….and come to all 14 if you’d like!
